Bicyle Safety Habits

  • ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET, even on short rides (CPSC-approved).

  • Concentrate on riding, stay in control, and use hand signals for turns.

  • Watch out for cars coming out of driveways and alleys, or pulling away from the curb.

  • Never carry a passenger on a bicycle built for one.

  • Don't hitch or hang on to motor vehicles and don't ride close to parked vehicles.

  • Look ahead to make sure the ground or pavement is smooth and dry with no obstacles.

  • Don't speed or ride recklessly and keep your hands on the handlebars because you can lose control of the bicycle and fall or crash.

  • Allow pedestrians to go first at street crossings and on sidewalks.

  • Be highly visible to drivers by wearing bright colored clothing and helmets.

  • Scan for danger by looking in all directions for approaching vehicles.

  • Ride single file on the right side of the road with traffic.

  • Stop at all stop signs and lights, and obey traffic signals.

  • Walk bicycles across intersections and railroad crossings.

  • Use a headlight and red rear light if you must ride at dusk or night.
